so we assume that 1.8 means 1/8 since you would just have 19+1+0.8=20.8, but that's not what you wrote so therefor, since the '/' key is close to the '.' key, assume that it is 1/8 so

    19 and 1/8 long

    cut into 5 equal pieces

the remainder was 2 and 1/4 (again assuming the. vs / error) inches long so

    19 and 1/8=5 times (legnth of each piece) + 2 and 1/4

so we subtract 2 and 1/4 from each side so

    19 and 1/8 - (2 and 1/4)

remember that 19 and 1/8=19+1/8 and 2 and 1/4=2+1/4 so therefor it is

    19+1/8-2-1/4

    move them around

    19-2+1/8-1/4

    17 + (1/8-1/4)

    1/4=2/8

    17 + (1/8-2/8)

    17 + (-1/8)

    17-1/8

    16+8/8-1/8

    16+7/8

16 and 7/8=5 times (legnth of each peice)

    divide both sides by 5

    (16 and 7/8) / 5=legnth of each peice

    remember that 16 and 7/8=16+7/8 and that ((a+b) / c) = (a/c) + (b/c) so

    (16 + 7/8) / 5) = 16/5 + (7/8) / 5

    16/5=3 and 1/5

    remember that (7/8) / 5 = (7/8) times 1/5 = (7 times 1) / (8 times 5) = 7/40

    3 and 1/5+7/40

    1/5=8/40

    3+8/40+7/40=3 + 15/40=3+3/8

each piece was 3 and 3/8 inch long

    I'm assume 1.8 means 1/8 and 1.4 means 1/4

    Convert to fractions:

    19 1/8 = 153/8

    2 2/8 = 18/8

Subtract amount remaining from the amount being cut into 5 pieces

    153/8-18/8=135/8

Split amount remaining into 5 equal pieces:

    (135/8) / 5 = 3.375 = 3 3/8 inches.
