    Bob is 10.1 miles away from home.

    Solution:

    Given that

    Bob is training for a Race.

    Number of miles Bob ran away from home = 14.6 miles

    Number of miles Bob ran towards from home = 9.8 miles

    Number of miles Bob ran again from home = 5.3 miles

    Need to determine how far is bob from his home.

    Let position of home = A

    First, Bob ran 14.6 miles away from his home:

    Let first Bob run from A to B

    => AB = 14.6 miles

    Second, Bob ran 9.8 miles towards his home:

    From B to C toward A (home) = BC = 9.8 miles

    So AC = AB - BC = 14.6 - 9.8 = 4.8 miles

    Finally bob ran 5.3 miles away from his home:

    From C move to D (away from home that is A) = CD = 5.3 miles

    So AD = AC + CD = 4.8 + 5.3 = 10.1 miles.

    Hence bob is 10.1 miles away from home.
