To answer this question you will start with finding the area of one piece of fabric. Each piece is 1/4 yd x 1/4 yd, so 1/16. square yd.

If she gets 8 pieces, that is 1/16 x 8 = 2 yds of fabric for each scarf.

    To make 7 scarves, she'll need 2 yd x 7 = 14 square yards of fabric total.

The pieces of fabric she can buy are 1/4 x 2 = 1/2 square yard.

If you divide the amount she needs (14) by the amount that comes in each large piece of fabric (1/2 yd), you will get 28.

    28 divided by 1/2 is 28 x 2/1.

She will need 28 large pieces of fabric to make 7 scarves.
