    (x^m) (x^n) = x^ (m+n)

    and

    x^-m=1 / (x^m)

    1/2 (2^3) (2^-4) =

    (1/2) (2^ (3-4)) =

    (1/2) (2^-1) =

    (1/2) (1/2^1) =

    (1/2) (1/2) = 1/4
