The temperature in Alaska is 15° Celsius at midday. By evening the temperature is 5° Celsius. The drop in temperature can be calculated by (+15) - (+5) = 10

By midnight the temperature is - 8° Celsius.

By how much has the temperature dropped from midday (show your calculations using a similar format to the one above) ?

    (+15) - (-8) = 23° difference

    The confusing thing is probably the sign change. If so, think of the negatives as canceling each other out. "Fifteen minus negative eight" can be read "fifteen plus eight" for instance.
