Ms. Fox asked her class "Is the sum of 4.2 and √2 rational or irrational?" Patrick answered that

the sum would be irrational.

State whether Patrick is correct or incorrect. Justify your reasoning.

    Patrick is correct because √2 is irrational (It is a real number that can't be expressed as a ratio), and even if 4.2 is added, the sum still won't be able to be expressed as a ratio √2=approx. 1.41421, and √2 + 4.2=approx. 5.61421. The only change in the number is in the first two digits.
