    Lets say the number = x

    Six times a number is decreased by 9, the result is 3

    6 times x is decreased by 9, the result is 3

    (decreased means to subtract and results means equals)

    6x - 9 = 3 (add 9 to each side)

    +9 + 9

    6x = 3 + 9

    6x = 12 (divide each side by 6)

    6x/6 = 12/6

    x = 2

    The number is 2
