Rory is driving 584 miles to a family reunion. She will drive half of the distance by herself the first day. The second day, Rory and her cousin will share the driving equally. How many miles will her cousin drive? Write an equation to solve. Use a variable for the unknown.

    Rory and her cousin traveled 146 miles each

    The total distance to be covered can be expressed as;

    T=H+2B

    where;

    T=total distance to be covered

    H=distance covered on the first day

    B=distance covered by either Rory or her cousin on the second day

    In our case;

    T=584 miles

    H=584/2=292 miles

    B=b

    replacing;

    584=292+2*b

    2 b=584-292

    b=292/2=146 miles

    Rory and her cousin traveled 146 miles each
