Grade 8 - The Pythagorean Theorem

1) Jovi is laying a foundation for a garage with dimensions 10m by 6m. To check that the foundation corners meet at 90 degrees angles, Jovi measures a diagonal. How long should the diagonal be?

2) A sloped mountain road is 12.7 km long. It covers a horizontal distance of 8.9 m. What is the change in elevation of the road?

Answer in the Pythagorean Theorem way.

    1) pythagorean theorem = a2 + b2 = c2

    SO:

    10^2 + 6^2 = c2

    100 + 36 = c2

    136 = c2

    Diagonal should equal about 11.66 meters

    2) pythagorean theorem = a2 + b2 = c2

    SO:12.7^2 + 8.9^2 = c2

    161.29 + 79.21 = c2

    240.5 = c2

    Elevation should equal about 15.1 degrees
