Sam and Alex play on the same soccer team. Last Saturday Alex scores 3 more goals than Sam, but together they scored less than 9 goals. What are the possible number of goals Alex scored?

    Suppose Sam scored x goals which means Alex scored x+3 goals since he's scored 3 more than Sam. So the equation becomes something like-

    x+x+3 < 9 [ x+x+3 since together they scored less than 9]

    ⇒ 2x+3<9

    ⇒2x<6 ⇒x<3

    Thus possible chances are 0,1 and 2. You just add that to Alex's score which is (x+3) and u get his possible goals as 3,4 or 5, thereby satisfying the total goals of <9.
