In a recent survey of 974 voters, 724 indicated that they were in favor of a new city park, while the other 250 voters said that they were opposed.

Using this survey as a basis, if 40,000 citizens vote next week, how many are likely to be opposed to the new park? Round to the nearest whole number.

    250/974 = x/40,000 ... 250 opposed to 974 total = x opposed to 40,000 total

    cross multiply because this is a proportion

    974x = 10,000,000

    x = 10,000,000/974

    x = 10266.94 rounds to 10,267 <==
