It depends on what the question asks if it asks to turn an improper fraction into a mixed number like 55/10 would be 5 and 1/2 because there are 5 10's in 55 and 5 are left over and 5 is half of 10

First, change the mixed fractions in to improper fraction. To do this, multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction. Add the product to the numerator, keeping the denominator the same. Do that to the other fraction as well and then add or subtract them as you would regular fractions.
