1/8 is bigger because the bigger the denominator the smaller the fraction piece is. Think about how a pizza slice is cut into 16 small pieces, and you only get one. Now, think about you cutting 8 slices and getting one. Obviously the 1/8 one is bigger.

1/8 is bigger, 1/8 is technically 2/16, and 2/16 is greater than 1/16
