    x = 150 people at dinner

    Step-by-step explanation:

    (2/5) x - had fish

    (1/3) x - had chicken

    The sum of this two fractions is: 2/5 + 1/3

    First, we must bring these two fractions to the same denominator.

    First fraction we will multiply with number 3 and get:

    (2/5) · 3 = 6/15

    Second fraction we will multiply with number 5 and get:

    (1/3) · 5 = 5/15

    Now we can calculate the sum of this two fraction:

    6/15 + 5/15 = 11/15

    The fraction of the people which had lamb is:

    (4/15) x = 40 = > x = 40 : (4/15) = 40 · 15/4 = 150

    x = 150 people had dinner.

    God with you!
