The distance via the diagonal is calculated by the Pythagoras theorem:-

Diagonal = sqrt (500^2 + 800^2) = 943.4 feet.

Distance along 2 sides of rectangle = 500 + 800 = 1300 feet

So John walks 1300 - 943.4 = 356.6 feet more than Don.
