= 8/1 + 21/40
= (8/1 * 40/40) + 21/40
= 320/40 + 21/40
= 341/40
= 341 : 40 = 8.525

You need to convert 21/40 to a decimal which is 0.525.
You then add this to 8.
8 + 0.525 = 8.525
