As an improper fraction multiply the denominator by the whole number 4 * 31 = 124 then add the numerator,

    124 + 1 = 125. Put this number over the denominator

    125/4

31 1/4 is already in fraction form ...

As an improper fraction, however, it is 125/4

to make 31 1/4 and improper fraction:

    [ (31 x 4) + 1]/4 = 125/4

You multiply the whole number by the denominator of the fraction, and then add the numerator to that number. Then you put this number in the place of the numerator to get the mixed fraction.
