Tom is 3 times as old as Manny. In 4 years the sum of their ages will be 56. How old are Tom and Manny?

    Tom is 39, and Manny is 13.

    x = Manny's age

    3x + x = 56

    [Tom's age (which is 3 times Manny's} + Manny's age = sum of their ages]

    4x = 56 Divide 4 on both sides

    x = 14

    Manny is 14 years old

    Tom is 42

    [42 + 14 = 56]
