2/9 is less than 2/5 because since the denominator is larger, the pieces are smaller. (Numerator)

Answer: D. 2/9 - the reason I knew this was smaller was because the numerator (number in the top part of the fraction) stayed the same, but the denominator increased meaning we are dividing the same amount by a larger number of divisions. This means that it will be a smaller fraction.

Why do none of the other answer choices fit? Well, either the numerator increased or both the numerator and denominator increased by a margin that made the final fraction larger than the original 2/5.
