    4-2 3/4 = 1 1/4

    1 1/4 = 5/4=10/8

    10/8 divided by 1/8 = 10

    rain lasted 10 hours

4-2 3/4 = 1 1/4 (amount of water that rained into the gauge)

    1 1/4 = 5/4=10/8

    10/8 divided by 1/8 = 10

So the rain lasted 10 hours
