    I will define or explain about discrete and continuous data. Discrete data is the data that can count or data that have finite values or buckets while continuous is the data that cannot count or the data that have infinite number of steps, which form continuum. In your example, we can include that gravel in pile as a continuous data because we cannot count it just like the sand. The answer is continuous.
