    The equation to figure out a perimeter is P (perimeter) = 2w (width) + 2l (length).

    Then you plug the numbers we know into the equation P = 2w + 2l.

    l = w + 16

    P = 96

    96 = 2w + 2 (w + 16)

    Then you get rid of parentheses & you can get rid of these in two different ways.

    1) Distributing the 2

    96 = 2w + 2w + 32

    Then simplifying to get the answer.

    96 = 4w + 32

    64 = 4w

    16 = w

    2) Dividing the 2 by both sides of the equation

    48 = w + w + 16

    Then simplify the expression to get the answer.

    48 = 2w + 16

    32 = 2w

    16 = w
