What is the solution to this system of equations? 3x + y = 17 x + 2y = 49

    3x + y = 17 1

    x+2y = 49 2

    x+2y=49

    x = 49-2y

    Putting the value of x in equation 1

    3x + y = 17

    3 (49-2y) + y = 17

    147-6y + y = 17

    147-17 = 6y-y

    130 = 5y

    130/5 = y

    26 = y

    and x = 49-2y = 49-2*26 = - 3
