    Red apples + green apples = 39 apples

    9 red apples + green apples = 39 apples

    OR

    Red apples = X

    Green apples = Y

    X + Y = 39

    9+Y = 39

    Y = 30 (Subtract 9 from both sides)

    ratio = 9/30 or 3/10 (reduce the fraction by dividing by 3)
