Total number on the trip is 24

Let the number of girls be x

Then the boys are x + 8

So ... x + x + 8 = 24

2x + 8 = 24 ... This is the equation

2x = 24 - 8

2x = 16

x = 16/2

x = 8

Number of girls = 8

And number of boys = x + 8

Which is = 8+8 = 16
