Eff needs to buy food and medication for six cats and one dog. The cost of food and medication for a cat is $5 less than two-thirds of the cost of food and medication for a dog.

If Jeff spends a total of $195, the amount he spent on food and medication for the dog is

    say the food and med cost for a dog is x

    food and med cost for a cat would be 2/3x-5

    so we can assume:

    6 (2/3x-5) + x = 195

    4x - 30 + x = 195

    5x - 30 = 195

    5x = 195

    therefore x, the food and med cost for the dog is 195/5 = 39$

    i think that's right ...
