A ship traveled at an average rate of 22 miles per hour going west. It then traveled at an average rate of 12 miles per hour heading north. If the ship traveled a total of 158 miles in 9 hours, how many miles were traveled heading north?

    Tw = Time traveled west

    Tn = Time traveled north

    Tw + Tn = 9 hours

    22Tw + 12Tn = 158 miles

    Solve the 2 equations and you get

    Tw = 5 hours

    Tn = 4 hours

    12 x 4 = 48 miles traveled north
