Check my answer for a medal?

Wouldn't it be C since the distance of the diameter can't be negative?

The standard diameter of a golf ball is 42.67 mm. A golf ball factory does quality control on the balls it manufactures. Golf balls are randomly measured to ensure the correct size. One day, an inspector decides to stop production if the discrepancy in diameter is more than 0.002 mm. Which function could represent this situation?

A. f (x) = x - |42.67|

B. f (x) = |x| - 42.67

C. f (x) = |42.67 - x|

D. f (x) = 42.67 - |x|

In your options, f (x) is the calculated discrepancy and x is the measure of the golf ball.

The discrepancy will be the difference between the measured diameter and the standard diameter and can be both negative r positive: indeed your measure of the diameter can even be bigger or smaller than the standard measure.

The standard diameter is a positive quantity for sure, therefore option A has no sense.

Being a real quantity, the measured diameter will be a positive number for sure as well, which means that options B and D are not correct.

Your answer C is then the right answer because represents the difference between the standard and the measured diameter that can be either positive or negative but must have a maximum absolute value of 0.002
