Two-thirds of the dairy cattle on a farm are in the barn. One-fourth of the beef cattle are in the barn. There are 24 dairy cattle and 16 beef cattle in the barn. How many more beef cattle are on the farm than dairy cattle?

    The correct answer is 36 - there are 36 more beef cattle on the farm than dairy cattle. We can work this out by multiplying 16 by 3 to get 48. 48 take 12 is 36. 16 is one fourth, 24 is two thirds, which means you then need to divide this by two to get 12, which means that 12 is one third.
