How do waves change as they approach the shore? apex?

Waves generate due to the blowing of wind over the surface of water and it dies out when it reaches shore. Energy with in water sets in the orbital motion in wave. As the wave approach towards shore they start losing some energy due the friction force from opposite side and obstruction from the shoreline due to which dampened waves revert back and undergoes destruction once again as it collide with another incoming wave.

Height and Wavelength of wave is determined by existing energy within it and distance of it's origin.

The wind blowing over water causes formation of waves. The waves dampen when near the shore. As waves hit the shore, they lose some energy.
