How does sandpaper increase friction

Sand paper literally has little pieces of sand on it (at least most forms of sandpaper do), which creates great microscopic gaps between the paper and the tops of the little pieces of sand, which creates great resistance.

The sand on the sandpaper sticks to an object creating risistance and slightly slows it down
