Put the thermometer into boiling water and leave it for five minutes in order to get an accurate reading. remove the thermometer and while looking at eye level see where the line of the fluid sits. if it not exactly the 100 C or 212 F marker then you need to note the difference and compensate for this amount each time you use the thermometer. If you get radically different results often, you need a knew thermometer.
