If ALL the protists died, then eventually the whole ocean ecosystem will die as well. The organisms that feed on the protists won't have food, so they'll die, and the organisms that eat the protist-consumers would die without having protist-consumers to eat. Eventually this leads to bigger and bigger organisms until everything starves ... just peachy, eh?
