Why is a cathode ray tube connected to a vacuum pump?

    A cathode ray tube functions at a low pressure air pressure. To do this, air has to be pumped out of the tube. Therefore, a vacuum pump has to be used. Cathode rays can't penetrate through any amount of air. Hope this answers the question.
