What happens when two galaxies collide

    A galaxy is mostly empty space. There's actually very little chance of

    stars colliding, and to a great extent, the galaxies just pass through

    each other.

    However, their vast dust clouds are likely to collide, and that process

    leads to the birth of great numbers of new stars.
