Try at home mini-experiment. You will need 3 glasses-same size and shape. Fill one half-way with water, another almost full to the brim, and the other ¼ full with water. Order the glasses from least to greatest. Gently tap one glass with a spoon. describe why the sounds are different?

    1st - the one full to the brim

    2nd - the one halfway full

    3rd-the one 1/4 full

    Each of the glasses will have a different tone when hit with the spoon, the glass with the most water will have the lowest tone while the glass with the least water will have the highest. Small vibrations are made when you hit the glass, this creates sound waves which travel through the water. More water means slower vibrations and a deeper tone.
