For oxidation reduction reaction to take place, the two substances used in each half cell has to be connected by a closed circuit so that electrons can flow from the reducing agent to the oxidising agent. Electrons always flow from the anode to the cathode. The anode is always placed on the left side while the cathode is placed on the right side.
