When two horizontal forces are exerted on a cart, F1 = 650 N forward and F2 = 400 N backward, the cart undergoes acceleration. What additional force is needed to produce non-accelerated motion? In other words, what force F3 is necessary to have the net force on the cart be zero?

    Explanation:

    Force: This is defined as the product of mass and acceleration. The S. I unit of force is Newton (N). Force is a vector quantity.

    Horizontal force: These is a force that act from left to right or from right to left.

    Since the horizontal forward force acting on the cart is greater than the horizontal backward force the additional force needed to produce a net force of zero will act backward.

    F₁ = F₂ + F₃ ... Equation 1

    F₃ = F₁ - F₂ ... Equation 2

    Where F₁ = horizontal forward force, F₂ = horizontal backward force, F₃ = additional force.

    Given: F₁ = 650 N, F₂ = 400 N

    Substituting these values into equation 2

    F₃ = 650 - 400

    F₃ = 250 N.

    Therefore The additional force needed to produce a non accelerated motion = 250 N
