    The process of photosynthesis is given by the equation

    6CO ₂ + 6H₂O → C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ with sunlight as a source of energy for the reaction to proceed. To produce four molecules of sugar, multiply the whole equation by 4 and we have

    24CO₂ + 24H₂O → 4C₆H₁₂O₆ + 24O₂

    Therefore, the plant needs 24 molecules of sugar.
