You have a small tank of water. Suppose you make waves in the tank, and measure their speed in different depths of water. Which is the independent variable, and which is the dependent variable?

    Since the independent variable is the one being manipulated to cause a change in the dependent variable, the depth of the water is the independent variable and the speed of the waves is the dependent variable.
