The answer is Light waves always travel the same speed; however, the speed of sound is determined by the medium that it travels through. The speed of light is constant because "Speed is equal to distance divided by time". The speed of light in vacuum is exactly 299,792,458 m/s. The speed of light is certainly very impressive, but it has another quality that is even more remarkable. In free space (i. e. a vacuum) its speed is constant.
