During a full moon or new moon, the tidal range is the greatest. Tides rise and fall due to the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun, and rotation of the earth. Greatest tidal range occurs when the gravitational forces of both the Sun and the Moon are in alignment with each other. This is known as a spring tide.
