Crew members attempt to escape from a damaged submarine 141 m below the surface. What force must be applied to a pop-out hatch, which is 1.72 m by 0.859 m, to push it out at that depth? Assume that the density of the ocean water is 1024 kg/m3 and the internal air pressure is at 1.00 atm.

    20.9 x 10⁵ N

    Explanation:

The external air pressure downwards and internal air pressure upwards will cancel out. TH net pressure to be faced will be due to water column of 141 m depth.

    Pressure of water = hdg = 141 x 1024 x 9.8 = 14.15 x 10⁵ Pa

    Area of hatch = 1.72 x 0.859 = 1.4775 sq m.

    Total force required = area x pressure = 14.15 x 10⁵ x 1.4775 = 20.9 x 10⁵ N.
