A 16.0 kg canoe moving to the left at 12.5 m/s makes an elastic head-on collision with a 14.0 kg raft moving to the right at 16.0 m/s. After the collision, the raft moves to the left at 14.4 m/s. Disregard any effects of the water. Find the velocity of the can

    14.1 m/s

    Explanation:

    given,

    mass of canoe, M = 16 Kg

    initial speed in left, u = 12.5 m/s

    mass of raft. m = 14 Kg

    initial speed of raft in right, v = - 16 m/s

    taking right direction as negative

    after collision

    speed of raft, v' = 14.4 m/s

    speed of canoe, u' = ?

    using conservation of momentum

    M u + m v = M u' + m v'

    16 x 12.5 + 14 x (-16) = 16 x u' + 14 x 14.4

    16 u' = - 225.6

    u' = - 14.1 m/s

    negative sign represent the velocity is in left direction.

    speed of the Canoe after collision is equal to 14.1 m/s
