A 4.6 kg hockey puck is moving at 7.4 m/s, and is given a 14.4 kg m/s impulse in the same direction that it is moving. What is the final velocity of the hockey puck?

    The final velocity of the hockey puck = 10.53 m/s

    Explanation:

    Impulse: Impulse of a body is defined as the product of Force of a body and the time. Or it can also be defined as the product of the mass of a body and its change in velocity. The S. I units of impulse are, Ns or kgm/s.

    Mathematically, impulse can be represented as,

    I = m (v-u)

    making v the subject of formula in the equation above,

    v = (I/m) + u ... Equation 1

    Where I = impulse of a body, m = mass of the body, u = initial velocity of the body, v = final velocity of the body.

    Given: I = 14.4 kgm/s, m = 4.6 kg, u = 7.4 m/s.

    Substituting these values into equation 1

    v = (14.4/4.6) + 7.4

    v = 3.13 + 7.4

    v = 10.53 m/s

    Therefore the final velocity of the hockey puck = 10.53 m/s
