PART ONE

The arm of a crane at a construction site is

15.0 m long, and it makes an angle of 18.8◦

with the horizontal. Assume that the maximum load the crane can handle is limited

by the amount of torque the load produces

around the base of the arm.

What maximum torque can the crane withstand if the maximum load the crane can

handle is 553 N?

Answer in units of N · m.

PART TWO

What is the maximum load for this crane at

an angle of 27.0◦ with the horizontal?

Answer in units of N.

    Torque is the perpendicular component of the force times the distance.

    τ = F⊥ r

    Part One

    τ = (553 N cos 18.8°) (15.0 m)

    τ ≈ 7850 Nm

    Part Two

    7850 Nm = (F cos 27.0°) (15.0 m)

    F ≈ 588 N
