Why is it that auroral displays above Colorado can be forecast several days in advance?

    Because we can observe sunspot activity, and because that activity sends radiation toward Earth, we can calculate when the radiation will hit our atmosphere and where the radiation will hit based on the earth's rotation. That radiation is what causes the auroral displays.
