A beam of light is incident from air onto the surface of a liquid. When the angle of incidence is 45.0° the angle of refraction is found to be 36.0°. What is the index of refraction of the liquid? The situation is now reversed; that is, the beam of light is incident from the liquid onto the interface with the air. What is the critical angle for the light when it is incident on the liquid-air interface?

    angle of incidence i = 45°

    angle of refraction r = 36°

    refractive index

    n = sini / sinr

    n = sin45 / sin36

    n =.707 /.5877

    = 1.2

    refractive index of liquid = 1.2

    If critical angle be C

    SinC = 1 / n = 1 / 1.2

    =.8333

    C = 56.5°

    Citical angle = 56.5°
