Since electrons fill orbitals to produce the lowest energy state, why do you think electrons are unpaired in the free atom and weak-field complexes and are paired-up in the strong field complexes? Use the relative magnitudes of the crystal-field splitting Δo and the electron-electron repulsive energy in your answer.
