A 80.6 kg ice skater is moving at 3.34 m/s when she grabs the loose end of a rope, the opposite end of which is tied to a pole. She then moves in a circle of radius 0.714 m around the pole. Find the force exerted by the rope on her arms. The acceleration of gravity is 9.8 m/s 2. Answer in units of kN.

    Answer: 1.26kN

    Explanation:

    This kind of force that keeps a body moving in a circular path is known as the centripetal force (F). This force depends on the mass (m), velocity (v) and radius of the circular path in which the body moves (r).

    Mathematically,

    F = mv²/r

    According to the question

    Mass = 80.6kg

    velocity = 3.34m/s

    radius = 0.714m

    F = 80.6*3.34²/0.714

    F = 1259.3N

    F = 1.26kN

    Note that 1000N = 1kN
